Websense is an application which allows network administrators to prevent users from accessing certain Web sites. The package works by maintaining a database of Web pages that classifies them according to content; this database features more than a million sites, and is updated every day as new pages are discovered. In addition, filtering can be enhanced by blocking all sites whose addresses contain specific keywords.

One of the most common applications of Websense is to stop children seeing pornography. However, greater flexibility is possible: for instance, controls can apply only during specific times to enable possibilities like denying access to sport and music pages during working hours, but allowing access at other times. Restrictions can also be set according to the groups or departments to which users belong so, for example, businesses can stop everyone except human resources staff from reaching sites relating to employee recruitment.

The version of Websense most commonly deployed by Atomwide interfaces with an existing Microsoft Proxy Server. Websense is licensed on a subscription basis; the costs of one year subscriptions are listed below, but more economic two and three year options are available. Websense can be licensed per user, or per computer at the expense of some configuration flexibility.
